The Dark Chanting Goshawk (Melierax metabates)
It is a resident species of tropical and subtropical savannah. It builds a stick nest in a tree and lays one or two eggs. It eats a variety of vertebrate prey and large insects.
Dark Chanting Goshawk is a large, long-tailed, broad-winged hawk, with a 105 cm wingspan. It is slate-grey above and white with fine barring below. The tail is black and white. In flight, the wings are grey with black tips. The flight is stiff and mechanical.
This species derives its name from the breeding season song, which consists of chanted flutes and whistles.
I love the way they got their name!! How interesting is that. Gorgeous photos!! 😀
thanks so much…
Great pictures. I see the leg clips. Is it a pet or a resident at a sanctuary?
It is at a rehab centre where if possible damaged birds are set free when well, but not all are able so they keep them for education and to aid with funds collection…
I’m a member of three sanctuaries here and volunteer at another one.
This one is about 250 km away from me but every time we pass I stop…
km?……………lol
150 miles…
I went to Google to convert. The Internet is so wonderful!
One forgets we all have different ways of measuring things..
Actually, when the United States tried to convert to the metric system back in the late ’80s or so, I was at the forefront. Sadly, I have to resort to Google now.
Metric just seems so much easier…
Especially if one works in mathematics or science. I wanted to be an organic chemist and do research for Weyerhauser or the like.
I’m a Land Surveyor and started my career in the English system before we went metric… it certainly got easier after the change over..
More fabulous bird photos.
Thanks again,
This bird seems so funny but you captured again amazing photographs… Fascinated me. Thank you dear Rob, love, nia
Thanks Nia, a angry looking bird…
Love how you’ve seemingly captured his personality. Great shots. Birds are so grand.
An agro look about him, almost see right through you….
Stunning!! 😀
Thanks
Great photos, bdt. He looks so fierce and unhappy, that I wanted to say to him, “Smile for the birdie.” 😆
Kind of intimidating isn’t he?
Beautiful bird and shots. Do you use telephoto or just brave enough to get that close?
Most of the time lucky enough to get up close like these at a rehab center, But I’ve been known to climb trees, mountains etc to get as close as possible (much to my wife’s disgust)
Incredible photography once again!! I can’t believe how much expression this hawk projects from his face alone…not to mention his expansive stance with wings open and ready… Amazing buldogsturf!!
Thanks so much it is a very expressive bird and actually quite intimidating when it looks at you…
WOW!!!!!
Crazy Gorgeous!!
Fabulous shots!
Thank you…
