Blue Wildebeest or Blouwildebees as it’s called in Afrikaans..

A larger antelope found in Southern Africa, in fact over most of Africa. a Gnu as known by many, lives in herds that can number in hundreds but normally in groups ranging up to 30. Often found grazing in the company of zebra, complementary grazers the explanation, as well as the Zebras confusing stripes to predators.

They a frolickers and love to just run for the fun of it, with bursts of speed and then slowing down to amusing gaits of stiff legged canters. They are for some a trophy, need to be shot and the head mounted… I hate this and would rather see them alive and playing… much better in the open plains of Africa…

Would you rather see this..? or the photos below the first..?

  1. Wow! Beautiful (except for the first one). Do you ever get scared out there? Is it dangerous. I think I would be frightened. Is this an open reserve, a park, or just your backyard?

    • I have had the chance to walk among these animals in the wild.. most of these photos are taken in parks where one rides around in a car.. The Kruger National Park being my favourite… it is 350 Kilometers long and approx 80 kilometers wide. I as said camped in a park for 6 months where these animals literally lived next door, it was nothing to open the caravan door and have an elephant right there… if you know how to behave around them and recognise warning signs ones quite safe… In the parks you do not get out of the car, the lion would have you for breakfast…

  2. Beautiful photographs!
I didn’t like the first one though 😉 They are beautiful creatures (not too handsome) but all I can think of when I see them is that they killed Simba’s father (the lion king) 😉
    Just kidding!

  3. Breathtaking ~ ‘Bluewildebeest’ sounds like the perfect name for them… It’s like you are living in the land of wonder and magic there Bulldog ~ beautiful magic with your lens too! ~ Much Love

    • The clowns of the bushveld is what they are often called… and when they get in a good group and the sun is right their coats shine with a blue sheen beautiful…

  4. I hate to see animal heads on walls. My sister-in-law’s house in Tahoe is filled with such obscenities, and her husband is so proud of them. Love your photos of these magnificent creatures, alive and well and in their natural habitat. 😉

  5. Bleugh! GET RID OF THAT FIRST PHOTO!!! Love all the others. I love watching these guys on wildlife docos. Not so much the crossing of the Mara, but when they’rearsing about, kicking up their heels. You have some beautiful photos here. 🙂
