Eye Colour of Birds..

A question put to me “Why are so many birds eyes red” This was a good question and I decided to look into the tendencies… yes a lot are red but it appears they are not in the majority, yellow appears to be the colour of choice..  but it had me wonder why are our eyes certain colours, yes genes, DNA and contact lens seems the answer… I suppose the avifauna is the same… but I intend to follow this up as to see if seed eaters have a preference to a certain colour, as is the fruit, and bug birds, what of the predatory eagles or vultures… watch this space maybe a PhD is on the cards…

Imagine the conversation.. “What did you get your PhD for?”  “Birds eye colour..” maybe National Geographic’s have discovered my blog and want to finance the research… We’re allowed to dream aren’t we?? …  Here are a few photos of birds heads cropped from my photos to show some of the colours…

This Eagles eye is black from one side yet see when the sun catches the eyes…

  1. What an interesting subject to research — and a ph D perhaps too! Wow — Eyes are the windows to the soul they say — and in birds – well that has to be even more a mystical window…. These photos are breathtaking truly!!! The white horned owl looks like one I visit here at our wild life refuge … affectionately named ‘Hooter’ — Hooter does not know life in the wild — he has been imprinted from a young age and thinks he’s human — I did a post on him once… right when I began blogging http://throughthehealinglens.com/2012/02/11/wisdom-2/ Those yellow eyes! Amazing!! xo

    • I posted with tongue in cheek and now all of a sudden I’ve been researching and tabulating findings, the analysis of which is already beginning to show interesting findings… what starts as a joke with me sometimes ends as a major research..
I as a Land surveyor, I once looked at the angles of the pyramids and their geographical positions and started to find astounding correlations.. I went on for nearly two years before I gave up lacking a definite answer.. now this could be the next pain I’ve just started…

  2. Stop it!! Stop staring at me. I can’t take it anymore!! LOL 🙂 Seriously though, I never realized that birds have so many different eye colours. My favourite is the last one – his eye colour is gorgeous!

  3. Thanks for doing the research, bdt. I once saw a photo of a red-eyed owl. It was absolutely stunning. If we humans have red eyes, it just means that we had a very late night after too much partying. 🙂

    • How right you are… I was admiring a girls eye colour and mentioned it to my wife… she told me “not natural” I thought she was just being jealous… till she pointed out it was contact lens… wondered why I didn’t have a pair for bad eye days…
