I thought this was appropriate seeing its the weekend… what are you doing this one… enjoying yourself I hope…
The ISAF International Class Hobie 16 (H16) is a popular catamaran manufactured by the Hobie Cat Company for racing and day sailing. The craft was the driving force behind the popularization of beach cats and was recently inducted into the Sailing Hall Of Fame.
Introduced in 1972, the Hobie 16 is the second largest boat fleet in existence with over 135,000 boats built to date.
The boat is distinctly recognized for its asymmetric "banana" shaped hulls, designed to work without the need for dagger boards so the catamaran could be run up the beach without worry. The rudders kick-up automatically by lifting up on the tiller crossbar.
This is a sport in which I’ve partaken, twice in the Hobie Offshores in Durban, a city in South Africa, one of our larger harbours.
There is nothing like sailing a hobie, a thrill a minute when the wind is blowing.. I spent many hours on the Hobie with my son when he was growing up and he now owns his own Hobie 16. The following photos are of him with his wife, doing what’s call “flying the hull” it sometimes ends in a swim, as did this one..
“Concentrate Girl” I shout from my vantage point…..
“I told you to concentrate, I can see what’s going to happen..”
What do you do when the wife doesn’t concentrate..? Take a swim…
I had a Hobie Cat from 1978 to 1983. Got that out of my system early……….lol
This made me smile, looks like so much fun
Ahhhh sailing on a Hobie, you can’t beat ’em for action and fun!!! Great shots!!!
And that you can say again….
Totally awesome! That is my kinda fun!
Thank you it is the best…
looks like grand fun! And you surely caught the expression of many a husband! (boyfriend). LOL Great photos. 🙂
My son and his wife have many such tumbles.. but then hes young and likes to push the envelope…
Great photos. The only time I ever went in a Hobie, hubby managed to capsize it, and I was stuck underneath. A handsome young life guard came to my rescue, and went back to shore with him, whilst my beloved tried to right the boat. 😉
I”ve had a pretty girl or two on the hobie and capsized it on purpose.. just so I can help them back up… MMMmmm lovely fun..
Awesome shots!! So great, LOL, LOL! What a wonderful time 🙂
There is nothing like Hobie sailing… except when the wind don’t blow…
An asymmetric banana… oh my … I am very interested in asymmetry as my body has lots of that…but can’t imagine riding this hobie!! Your narration here is hysterical too Bulldog ~ loved it — and yes again – great shots!!!! ~ much love to you, R
You would enjoy it on the Hobie with me.. I’m calmer now than years ago… I don’t flip the boat… it is such a wonderful feeling.. It is fast and being so close to the water feels faster than what it is.. there is nothing like it.. except maybe flying in a micro-lite..
You are quite the adventurer Bulldog ~ I would probably love it – or would have when my hips stayed better in their sockets!! 🙂 If I ever get stable I’m coming to visit and we will take a calm rid in the Hobie 🙂 Sounds like heaven:)
I have had a paraplegic on the Hobie with me and he had a great time.. I’ve even had a friend with a leg in plaster and he enjoyed it, till he saw his Doctor that gave him a bit of a dressing down for getting his cask wet… I’ll look after you…
Awww – that is so amazing. Ok – I’m in 🙂
Done…
🙂
This was amazing post, seems not easy… 🙂 Wonderful photographs, Thank you dear Rob, love, nia
Its not that difficult once you understand the basics… but it is so much fun…
Like, like, like, like!!! That looks like so much fun :). Great action shots!
And that it is.. spent so many hours keeping myself fit on one of these…
Looks like fun. Hope the water’s warm.
Who feels a temperature when you’re having fun..
