The White-faced Whistling Duck (Dendrocygna viduata) is a whistling duck which breeds in sub-Saharan Africa and much of South America.
This species is gregarious, and at favoured sites, the flocks of a thousand or more birds arriving at dawn are an impressive sight. As the name implies, these are noisy birds with a clear three-note whistling call.
This species has a long grey bill, long head and longish legs. It has a white face and crown, and black rear head. The back and wings are dark brown to black, and the under parts are black, although the flanks have fine white barring. The neck is chestnut. All plumages are similar, except that juveniles have a much less contrasted head pattern.
It nests on a stick platform near the ground, and lays 8-12 eggs. Trees are occasionally used for nesting.
I was very privileged to capture on film (memory stick) a mother with her young, unfortunately within days all the young had disappeared, how who knows….
(Credit for the above goes to Wikipedia) I knew it all but I thought they needed the business……
These photos were taken on the ponds of Southbroom Golf Course…
These duckies are so cute!
So happy for you about the good news. 🙂
Thank you Louisa… was expected, yet was still good news when it came…
They are so beautiful I can watch them for hours… for days… 🙂 Thanks and Love, nia
Thanks Nia… they are special, specially the young…
I somehow read your posts in backwards order today — but WOW-WEEE the babies!! So so so cute – and such amazing pictures you take! I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen more exciting animal shots than yours — honest!!! I have some family of deer I’ve taken around here – and some duckies too – but never want to use them because they really look like I’m in kindergarten as compared to these (post-doctoral level) photos. I Love your work bulldog— you are an artist!! Much Love~ R
Robyn you are too kind… of the many photos I take an awful lot can’t and won’t make it onto the blog… but I’m just lucky that some come out looking not too bad… but thank you for the comment… don’t know how I’m gonna get my hat on today with all this praise…
You are most welcome Bulldog – you deserve the swollen head 🙂 Savor it ~ part of the joy of blogging and your work is just awesome. Ok – for me it’s that time — you know – Bath-Time…. my favorite time of all!! Enjoy your day friend!! x
What are you doing up so late get some rest now…
yes- my clock is way off and insomnia goes hand n hand with pain. Will start the effort now though – thank you dear one!
My new favorite bird. I love ducks…but these are just plain magical. Thank you for sharing. quack, quack….oh and the ducklings, I adore. 🙂
The ducklings were marvelous, and they do have a nice colour… but the whistling is magical..
How cute, awesome pics, thanks for sharing! Monkeys? Really? Now that is certainly interesting…. to a gal that never saw one except at the zoo. lol
There is a post coming soon of monkeys in the wild… they are quite cute actually…
They creep me out, maybe because they are so smart. But I’m very interested to learn more about them – so write on!
Those ducklings are SO cute! The pictures are so clear as well. Fantastic 🙂 !!!
Thanks so much appreciate the look in…
These are the coolest looking ducks I’ve ever seen. And the cute little babies. They made me smile.
they were so cute… thank you
Love the little baby duckies 🙂
They were great while they lasted till they disappeared…
They are lovely! When you leave home do you always have your camera with you? Hope you don’t lurk in the bushes when you go snap click snap (got to love the paparazzi) – for some or reason some people get the wrong idea if you do! dirty minded so and so’s.
I hardly leave the house without my camera… and there are probably an awful lot of people that think I’m the paparazzi… but then I’m quite big so they leave me alone…
hehe thanks for the heads up 🙂
Oh they are beautiful!
I was so sorry when these ducklings disappeared so quickly. The people that know say so many are caught and taken by monkeys… they were so cute…
Monkeys???
Small baboons or apes… apparently eat them the buggers…
Gosh and I thought foxes were bad!
Lovely photos I’d love to hear a duck whistle 😃
They are actually very vocal… and a nice sound to hear…
