Purple-crested Turaco (Lourie).

The Purple-crested Turaco (Tauraco porphyreolophus) is a species of bird in the Musophagidae family. It is found in South Africa, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe.

This bird has a purple coloured crest above a green head, a red ring around their eyes, and a black bill. The neck and chest are green and brown. The rest of the body is purple, with red flight feathers.

They live in moist woodland and evergreen forests. They eat mainly fruits.

The Purple-crested Turaco is the National Bird of the Kingdom of Swaziland. The crimson flight feathers of this and related Turaco species are important in the Ceremonial Regalia of the Saswati Royal Family.

It was listed in 2006 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species… It is quite common on the South Coast of Natal, where I managed to capture these photos.. but it is a shy bird and although you hear them they are difficult to capture in flight and in the trees as they choose dense foliaged trees to sit in… In five years these are the only photos I got.. although they spent a lot of time in the trees on our property..

‘Capture the Colour’ photos

They say. ” a picture paints a thousand words. Well, rather than asking you to write a five thousand word blog post, we’re inviting you to produce a blog post with up to 5 photos that really do ‘Capture the Colour’… the 5 colours Blue, Green, Yellow, White and Red.”

I was nominated by “Anotherdayinparadise” to do this challenge which ends on August 29th. I have to nominate 5 other bloggers, and time is fast running out. Fast running out, my word a last minute challenge I like to accept.

Babbas Lodge Bike outing.

I went with my Son-in-law for his Sunday bike ride at Babbas Lodge… The dogs there, fascinated me… even to them having their own water point…

I love dogs…

The riders take off and I now have time on my hands to look around and capture whatever is there… and these three dogs just caught my eye…

Wonder if this youngster will share his sausage roll with me..? if not it’ll have to be a drink…

And then it’s back home for us, where my constant companion waits for me…

Bushbuck or bosbok…

The bushbuck ( Tragelaphus scriptus ) is a small antelope in Africa , found south of the Sahara.

Adult bushbuck are an average weight of 70 kg and a height of 90 cm. The rams have horns up to 55 cm in length.

Bushbuck are not easily spotted, because they frequent dense forest areas and along rivers banks

The female gestation period is six to seven months, when a single lamb is born in the spring or summer. Bushbuck have a potential lifespan of nine years.

These, a mother and her young paid us a visit in the camp… casually walked past us….
