Giant Kingfisher…

The Giant Kingfisher (Megaceryle maxima) is the largest kingfisher in Africa.

This large Kingfisher feeds on crabs, fish, and frogs, caught in the typical kingfisher way by a dive from a perch.

The Giant Kingfisher is 42–48 cm (16½-18⅞ inches) long, with a large crest and finely spotted white on black upper parts. The male has a chestnut breast band and otherwise white under parts with dark flank barring, and the female has a white-spotted black breast band and chestnut belly.

In other words she wears the apron and him the bib…

    • that they are, the crab in the birds beak was quite a biggy and to watch her break the legs off and then swallow it was quite a sight… naturally that’s when my batteries on the camera died on me…

  1. Thank you for making a stop by my blog. I’m really glad to have the chance to make a reciprocal visit to you! Your photographs are gorgeous. I am a dedicated bird lover…and enjoy seeing birds from other parts of the world. Great shots! Debra

    • I took these photos and only when I got home did I notice some thing was a miss.. the books put my mind at ease and a friend said the easiest way to remember was with the apron and the bib… my next post of the Pied Kingfisher also has a subtle difference between the sexes… thanks for the comment… so damn cold up here today…
