The Sentinel Rock Thrush (Monticola explorator)
It’s found in Lesotho, South Africa, and Swaziland. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical high-altitude grassland.
Now I don’t know much about this bird and have only seen it once, so I will show you the photos I managed to capture and hope that it is in actual fact the Sentinel Rock-thrush and not the Cape Rock-thrush or the Short-toed Rock-thrush… so any experts out there feel free to assist me here if you so wish…
Nice series. The bird is a Cape rock thrush (Monticola rupestris).

The differentiating ID feature is its brown back as opposed to the blue/grey upper parts of the Sentinel and short-toed rock thrushes.
Thank you for the visit and input… much appreciated…
I’m always so surprised at the gorgeous colors! These are quite special. The head and body colors are in such contrast!
I agree it almost looks as though it tripped and stuck it’s head in a pot of paint…
gorgeous shots, such vibrant color and texture. looks like you got his attention.
Thank you.. quite a fellow…
A Great Collection of photos.
Thanks Mate…

The trouble is they are all so close… but I think I got it right… I haven’t been shot down on Face Book yet so it must be right…

What beautiful colouring he has. He’s gorgeous. 🙂
couldn’t agree more… only ever seen the one…
Can’t you see Vogue magazine featuring this color combination in the new collections?
it might just be the birds claim to fame…
Beautiful little bird … love his greys and rusty shade !!!!
Thank you… an unusual colour combo I thought… almost as though he dipped his head in the paint can…
