African ground squirrel… in Kathu..(25)

African ground squirrels (genus Xerus)

The squirrels live in open woodlands, grasslands, or rocky country. They are diurnal and terrestrial, living in burrows. Their diet is roots, seeds, fruits, pods, grains, insects, small vertebrates and bird eggs. They live in colonies similar to North American prairie dogs, and have similar behaviour.

Their home range is shared with other groups which is actually quite a surprising thing, since in case of most of the mammals there is generally an extremely tough competition to get the female. The group-living instinct of this species gives it a survival opportunity from predators overweighing the disadvantage of breeding opportunities which come from competition.

  1. I love the final photo! So cute! Congratulations on 300 posts! That’s quite an achievement. And as much as I loved the photos of the “talking” animals, I was focused on how red the earth is! The color is gorgeous, and quite different from our soil. Differences in things like that fascinate me! 🙂

    • The Kalahari has so many different coloured soils .. that it is a fascinating place.. semi desert with slow moving dunes.. yet somehow the colours never seem to mix, or if they do they make another colour.. it really is a fascinating place to visit…

  2. Cheers and congratulations dear Rob, how beautiful photographs, but I loved especially this lovely little boy 🙂 Thank you, Blessing and happiness to you all, love, nia

  3. Always fun with your ….. animal cartoons – I like a good KFC too, but we don’t have them in Sweden, that squirrel is better of than us. They look quite big ?????

      • They have loads in Boston too! But normal size … I can’t remember I have seen a squirrel in NY – not even in Central Park, not what I can remember.

        • I have photos of them lying around in Central Park.. went to pet one, or get friendly and a New York-er told me not to, “you might get rabies” he told me, damn I come from Africa, there is more chance of getting it here I would have thought…

          • You’re great … it was like when I moved from Belfast to Landskrona – and Landskrona didn’t have that great reputation. Not safe a man said to me .. hi, I been living in Belfast for 10 years .. I’m sure I can handle Landskrona and I can. Nothing has bothered me.

    • I could think of nothing better than squirrels… cant take good horse photos .. so gave up on that one… I could actually not believe that the 300 had come up so quick… but thank you always appreciate it when you comment…
