A Black and White Photo challenge, “Neighbourhood”
Now this was a real challenge set by Sonel (CLICK HERE TO SEE HER POST)
In the days of my first camera, an instamatic that took photos in B & W, it was a case of point, shoot and hope for the best. The results would only be known when someone developed the photos for you, and then there were so many “Oh Carp” (no I didn’t spell it wrong, just thought I’d be polite) moments.
This challenge had me setting the camera on B & W and trying all sorts of settings… in the end I reverted to the Auto setting and did a little manipulating on the computer using my free photo software.
Why is this so difficult.? Surely when one only has to think of white balance and exposure, this should be so much easier than shooting in colour.
Well here are the results, and thanks Sonel for setting another challenge for me to discover how to take photos in B & W again. Now here is my entry for this weeks challenge, a pictorial of the local N.G. Kerk, a wonderful building, good architecture and huge here in my neighbourhood. Seats 7 000 in the auditorium…
Plenty of glass to give great reflections…..
And plenty of shapes and sizes for the challenge…….
and what an auditorium… 7 000 people, three tiers… can you imagine how that must sound when they sing a hymn???
so very well done Bulldog. I did a ton of black and white – while in college, dark room, the whole thing. Your images are excellent. I’m aware of the difficulty of some of those shots! Just outstanding my friend! xx
You have an artistic eye, Bob ….. I’m not very found of B&W or sepia photos – even if photographer love working in it, I think our world needs all the color it can get.
I can image that taking photos in B&W isn’t the easiest job … never tried myself.
My pick of this bunch .. is the one with the 3 crosses.
You have done a truly great job with the challenge.
The Three Crosses was my personal favorite as well, but anything when you are behind the lens is a wonderful thing. 🙂
Thank you LuAnn… the Crosses was probably the easiest to take in B&W… so I enjoyed that one too…
And the winner is: the three crosses. Often the simpler, uncomplicated photos that say the most.
It was by far the easiest to take in B&W… the others had me wearing a thinking cap…
That is a beautiful black and white pictures. What struck is the cross. A neighborhood of strong faith can withstand any storm.
Love the black and white photography. My favorite . . . the crosses! Losing myself in your photography!
These are all really beautiful. My favorite is the one with the crosses. Not sure why, but I love it.
Thank you…
Your B & W work is super duper bulldog! Love them all – the auditorium photo is pretty artsy! Beautiful work!!
x Love to you ~ Robyn
Thanks Robyn… still learning this art form… I need something that moves, like a bird or animal, that I don’t have to think too hard about… this is so different… but thanks for the lovely comment…
I’ve looked at a few of these now for Sonel’s challenge and they’re wonderful. I love B&W and the picture of the crosses is so powerful. Well done! 😀
Thank you… I did enjoy the crosses myself.. the only one I felt came out well without having too many adjustments…
wow – they are beautiful photos. My hubby LOVES black and white. In the days of film did all his photography in black and white and had a dark room to do all his own developing. These photos are truly gorgeous.
Thank you… I seem to have never learnt the art of B&W… in the old days I shot and hoped… now with a camera and all it’s adjustments and settings… I’m more confused when doing B&W than with colour…
I think these are all very interesting. The three crosses is a beautiful photo. I love the way the sparse little trees frame the wooden crosses. And the seventh photo is wonderful with the reflections. Was that the moon? It didn’t have the glare of the sun, yet I don’t think the photo was taken at night. I found that really interesting!
Thank you… kinda like the crosses myself… the glare is actually from the setting sun… the camera made a good adjustment for the B&W photo but the colour came out so much better… the window looks golden…
You’ve inspired me! Just love all of these…wonderful job!
Thank you… coming from you I’m encouraged…
I love B&Ws! The pictures with the crosses and the reflections in the windows are my favourite!
Thank you… couldn’t seem to capture the reflections so well in B&W in colour they are so much better…
It’s amazing in B&W – so crisp and clear! I think colour sometimes detracts from what you are supposed to see… maybe that’s just me….
I have to admit I enjoyed the challenge of photo shooting the building… not my normal subject… damn thing didn’t move around and fly off when I pressed the shutter button… LOL
You done good, bulldog. LOVE the crosses and the reflections!
Thank you… still seem to have a lot to learn…
Love all these captures and the info was really interesting! Well done. 😀
Thank you Jackie…
You’re very welcome! I hope you have a great day. 😀
You have captured some very interesting angles and reflections in these photos. I agree with you; it’s always good to stretch your comfort zone’s abilities and take on new challenges.
The B & W just seemed such an easy thing to do… but it ain’t…
**applause** I loved the crosses and auditorium especially!! Great job, Bulldog!! 😀
Thank you…
B&W is its own art form, harder than it seems.
You can say that again… didn’t realise just how hard…
They are beautiful! You are very talented.
I remember those days and “carp” moments when you have to wait to develop the films… 😉
Thank you… yes the days of wondering how many came out…
Great shots to capture the building. I like the use of different materials in the building.
Thank you.. I’m going to do a post using the colour photos I took as well… it is really a magnificent building…
Wow! These are all amazing shots bulldog and I am so glad you enjoyed the challenge and thanks so much for taking part my friend. I just love it! You’ve captured it all so well…the shadows and even the reflections. Wonderful! 😀
Thank you… a lot more difficult than it seems… now to get out and search for bridges for next week…
You are welcome bulldog and yes, I totally agree with you there and that is what makes is so much fun. I don’t like being bored as you’ve noticed. LOL!
Can’t wait to see your bridges and I am sure they are going to be gorgeous! 😀
Well done! You need all the gradations from white to black, don’t you?
That is for sure… a lot more difficult than it seems…
