40 years ago to day…

Forty years ago today, this man stood proudly waiting for his future wife to join him at the registry. His fear, she might not turn up, were soon dismissed as the most beautiful woman he had ever met joined him for their marriage vows.

Three weeks we knew each other before the engagement, and a further six weeks and the day had come. Now I wonder where are the sceptics that said it wouldn’t last? For in their face I want to stand and laugh.

Life has been a blast with her at my side, yes there have been times of strife and heart ache… but through all the bad times and good times we have always stood together.

We’ve been broke and down and by supporting each other we’ve turned things around. We are not the picture of a perfect marriage, but we have to have done something right, to still be together.

Now this poem I borrowed to share with her today, I wish I could have written one myself, but I do know my limits…

When years are passing by like days,
and in my hand your hand is placed,
a knowing smile crosses your face,
a simple touch can still make my heart race.

When I can see my soul in your eyes,
and you see your soul in mine we realize,
that a love so deep can harbour no lies,
where our only tears shed were happy tears we’ve cried.

I love you as much now as I ever did before,
if possible, I may even love you more,
all starting from a feeling we did not ignore,
a feeling of connection we chose to explore.

I don’t know what it is that you saw in me,
what I saw in you was the utmost happiness that can ever be,
even more so on the day when you and I became “We”,
I can still smile and say with love and truth Honey,

I love you…Happy Anniversary.

Love is not as simple as candlelight and roses……love is day-to-day living, taking time, making time to be there, with open arms and a giving heart…Love is the special life we share.

Happy Anniversary my Sweet Love!
For you, I thank the Lord above

You’ve given me hope, inspiration and truth
Because of you I feel never-ending youth

When heavy storms have come our way
Your love has always made me stay

Each morning I wake and see your face
I know in you, I’ve found my place

Our bond is extraordinary, beautiful, and real
It’s remarkable how wonderful you make me feel

We belong together, you and I
That, the world can never deny

Ne’er in my life will I find another woman
Who could ever fulfil me the way you can

The life we’ve shared this past 40 year
Has proved forever it shall persevere

I will love you forever in every way
That will remain constant until my dying day.

  1. I read this several times the day you posted the Blog, too teary eyed to comment. As I read it again I am smiling at your beautiful love story!

  2. Oh my goodness…I’m going to get all teary…what a loving tribute. I’m sure your Bride returns the love and gratitude. I wish you so many more happy, loving years together. The Linda and Bulldog story is one to inspire us all…xo

    • I knew this raving beauty just had to be mine… and I know what I want when I want it… she didn’t have a chance… but thank you for such a nice comment..

    • Thank you Lorna… it’s been easy for me but, on occasions I think difficult for Linda, I’m not the easiest of people… but she has staying power… lol

      • And, if I were to guess, she would say the same thing about herself–which is why the two of you are still in love. You see the best in each other and are grateful that each of you accepts the other’s, shall I say, quirks. 🙂 That’s true love!

      • As I heard the story, they both went into a diner in Albuquerque and sat down at the bar. They found that they were both headed to California – even to the same city. By the time dinner was over Grandpa told Grandma that he was going to spend the rest of his life with her – and he was right!

  3. Just beautiful bulldog. You are such a romantic and sweet soul. Happy Anniversary to you and Linda and may there be many, many more my friend. 😀 *hugs* to both of you. xxx

  4. How lovely, Rob. You and Linda have something very special, and the story is even more lovely when you mention how quickly the two of you knew you each had found “the one.” I hope you enjoyed your special day yesterday. All the best for a continued future together.

    • Yesterday was wonderful… Linda and I went to see a show all about the music from the 60s, 70s and 80s this did bring back a lot of memories and fun… had Linda dancing in the aisle… not me, I’m far too refined for that… or maybe shy…

  5. This is the most beautiful post I have ever read on WordPress. Not sure if it is because I have grown to love you both so much or what…..but, I have tears rolling down my face. I am so happy for you both. You truly do show what true love can conquer when you stick together. Absolutely beautiful. Congratulations to you both!! And thank you!!

  6. FORTY years! That’s incredible. And having known each other for such a short while… a brave step, but when you know, you know! Congrats, and many more years of love and companionship to you both.

  7. Congratulations ♥ This is such a lovely way to show her your love ♥ I remember you told me the story (where you met each other etc.) one year ago. All the best to both of you and many more wonderful years together ♥

  8. What a beautiful love story…happy anniversary and here is to 40 more! You chose a very moving poem above and I am guessing the final part of the post was yours, a most heartwarming piece. 🙂

    • Thank you LuAnn… I wish I could claim the last one as being mine, but it is one I found on the net and had to do a little altering… so I suppose it is partially mine…

      • Whether it is all yours or not, the deep emotion I felt while reading this post was definitely all yours! The very best to you and Linda always! 🙂

    • Thank you.. as the day draws close to the end I can with all honesty say it has been a good one.. we have just returned from a show all about the 60s 70s and 80s… and it brought back so many good memories…

  9. Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. bulldog! This was the first post I read today, the day My Beloved and I celebrate our 34th wedding anniversary (10/6). May my tribute to her be as beautiful as the one you gave to Linda in this post. I hope you had a great anniversary day, and may your future continue to be an adventure full of love, joy, gratitude, and admiration.

  10. A beautiful way to express your love for the woman who chose to take the journey with you. I’m glad she popped in and revealed how you met..it’s always fun to know where and how the journey began. While not quite as fast out of the gate as you and your lovely bride…we were 7 months in when we said our I do’s…32 years ago – and like you say…where are the skeptics now? Likely on number 2 or number 3! Hearty congratulations to you both, no one said it would be easy, but YOU can say it was/is worth it!

  11. A friend invited me to a house warming party and just as I arrived, this man with longish hair, a droopy mustache and legs that reached right up to his belly button, walked up to me and asked me to dance. Two minutes into the dance he asked me to marry him, I looked at him laughed, and asked him how many beers he had consumed, he in return told me that he was dead serious, and that he was going to marry me, he then stood back bowed, and introduced himself as Rob.
Thank you for 40 years, how time flys when your having fun….

  12. That is hands down the most beautiful blog post I have ever read! It is wonderful to hear about such a strong and enduring love in a time when so many people don’t take their vows seriously anymore. Congrats to both of you. You are obviously a very special couple :).

  13. A fitting poem for the celebratory couple. Happy Anniversary to you and Mrs. Bulldog. … and I just clinked the screen with my wine glass as a toast … and a song for the happy couple.

  14. Making your wife cry is most often a bad thing…but I’m sure these tears are ones of joy…and that is beautiful. Congratulations for making the long journey. You are an inspiration to those of us who believe in the longevity of marriage.

  15. I kept scrolling down hoping to see a picture of your wife, but only found an elephant (from the previous post) – Maybe you could stick up a few pictures from 40 years ago and now (You’ve got 9 years on me and my mrs).

  16. Wicked – congratulations guys – happy anniversary. Wishing you both a super special day with your friends and family but more importantly together. Love, love LOVE the poem – who cares who wrote it – says what needs to be said and is beautiful. Sending you both huge hugs from NZ. xoxoxo
