Greater Striped Swallow (Cecropis cucullata)
This swallow breeds in South Africa and in winter moves North to Angola, Tanzania and southern Zaire. I wonder if it needs a passport.??
This bird loves open grassland and mountainous areas, avoids more wooded areas. It is a common bird and they say it’s unafraid of humans… now I know why they tend to sit and pose for me.
The bird builds a bowl-shaped mud nest, with a tubular entrance on the underside. It’s softly lined and is reused quite often. Caves or overhangs of rocks even fallen trees are used for nesting sites, however they benefited from using buildings, bridges, culverts and similar man-made structures.
Glossy white eggs with a few brown spots 3 being a normal clutch. Incubation by the female for 17–20 days to hatch. Both parents feed the chicks. Fledging takes another 23–30 days.
My swallows have had another disastrous mating season. This is the fourth year that they are nesting in my garage. As soon as she has laid some eggs, something comes into the garage and destroys the nest. Yesterday whilst in the garage I noticed a very young snake (it looked like a young boomslang) next to the nest. I managed to chase it out of the garage and when I went back about 10 min.later the nest was broken. I feel so sorry for them as they are quite tame and when in the garage, allow me to come quite close. Also, when I walk the dogs they accompany me all the way (about half a kilometer). How can I ensure that these swallows will be safe next year, should they return. Do gecko’s eat their eggs or babies? There are always plenty in the garage. I have kingfishers’ nesting outside my kitchen about 12m. from the garage…could they be the culprits. This happens every year. Do you have any advice on how I can protect their nest.
Hi.. snakes don’t normally destroy a nest, another bird, rat, or such might… but I’ve never heard of a snake doing that
We are about to enclose our patio where the swallows nests have been for years. How do we ensure that they come back and rebuild in a different location. It has been a great joy to have them here every summer and would hate to lose them
In my experience if they have always bred there and you enclose your patio they will still find another spot in the area…. obviously they find good food nearby to raise their young, if not they would never have nested there.. hope they return for you
I have a pair of greater striped swallow’s nesting by my front door. How do I know if they have laid eggs. Thanks
Now that you will never know without specialist equipment… but when you see them flying in eith food you’ll know they have suceeded in breeding. ..
Hi there got great news. We have 3 baby greater striped swallows. Left the nest for the first time today. So awesome..
Hey that is great news….
I am hand raising a Greater Striped Swallow chick. Their nest was broken by construction workers and one chick fell to death. Because the windows were installed into the new building the swallow parents did not have access to the baby for more than a day. My husband brought a very small, cold and downy baby swallow to me. What a joyful experience to observe the chick’s recovery from near starvation, and cold to a beautiful and happy young bird! Hopefully to be released within the next 2 weeks. (I have , meanwhile, turned into an expert fly, moth, caterpillar and locust catcher!!)
The colors are fascinating. I had to laugh at the fourth and fifth photo as it looks like the bird is pumping up his chest to let us know he rules the roost.
Thank you.. he has a bit of an attitude…
You have so many interesting, beautiful birds where you live. Lovely series of photos Bulldog. 🙂
Thanks LuAnn
Wonderful series of a pretty bird. The swallows here are not that colorful.
Thanks Inga… I have wondered why most of our birds are so colourful… must be something to do with their surrounds and camo…
What a lovely looking bird with those glossy inky blue black wings.
Thanks Chris… it is quite a beaut..
Oh he’s a pretty one! You see you can’t leave bulldog, you’re our own David Attenborough! 🙂
Thanks Amanda… your words are always so kind…
What a beautiful bird… colours fascinated me as your amazing shots… Thank you dear Rob, have a nice day, love, nia
Thanks Nia…
It’s so wonderful to see them up close Rob. Fantastic shots my friend! I love them. Thanks for sharing. 😀 *hugs*
Thanks Sonel… how you feeling??
You’re welcome Rob and a bit better than yesterday. Just struggling to sleep. At 2am in the mornings I cough myself awake and then I can’t sleep again. It sucks but I am hopeful that it will be better tonight. 😀
How are you and Linda feeling today?
Linda is on the mend… thanks Sonel..
So glad to hear that Rob. *big hugs* to both of you. xxx

Lovely colors. My little one proclaimed this as her new fav. 🙂
Thank you..
I would find it hard to identify that bird without the tail on display. Most attractive.
Thanks Col… not a lot of difference between it and the Lesser Striped except on the breast markings and size…
Can I use a few of your elephant photos in my Blig today? If so do you know if there is a special way to acknowledge they are your photos?
Feel free to use what ever has no copy right on it…
you do so good with your bird photos Rob. I get the camera out and they laugh and fly away…….
You must be pretty… I’m ugly so they sit in wonderment of what they see…
Very beautiful bird, thanks for sharing your passion. ;o)
Thank you Kymee..
I’ve always loved swallows. They have a happy chuckling song and they eat insects (which I am happy to live without).
Thanks Anneli… they are quite musical.. even noisy when sitting together in a group…
I love that rich chestnut brown and navy blue together!
It goes well as a combination…
What a beautiful bird. My favorite is the 3rd one. It sure is nice to have them pose like that. 🙂
Thanks Maralee… it is one of the easier ones to photo… tend to sit and pose for you…
Great shots !
Thanks..
This one looks dressed up for a party. Ready to impress!
They are rather smartly dressed…
He’s a pretty boy! Wonderful photographs.
Thank you…
Looks like he could be posing for the camera…amazing colours.
They are actually quite unafraid and sit and look at you… one of the easier ones to snap…
Beautiful and I have always loved them also, although it does not help if they try to build a nest in your house or verandah.
That’s right Spook … tend to want to move in with you…
Beautiful colorings and your close ups make him look so big! Are male birds more colorful than female?
Both the same in this case… not often found in birds, but it is so in this case…
WOW!
A lovely little fellow. Great pics, bulldog. 🙂
Thanks AD
I see them now and then, not as much as I used to though. They are the ones that used to line up on the phone lines before migrating for the winter – used to make one helluva racket for days on end before they left.
That sounds like them…
Quite the colorful little guy!
Thanks Frank..
What a beautiful bird and great images!
Thank you… they sure sit around and pose…
Dire che queste foto sono bellissime è veramente troppo poco. Sono super fantastiche. Wowwwwwwwww
Super fantastic.?? Wow thank you Patrizia… you are to kind with your complements…
