White-throated Swallow (Hirundo albigularis)
Common to South Africa which has benefited from the increased nesting opportunities presented by the construction of bridges and dams.
The swallow breeds in southern Africa from Angola and Zambia southwards to the Cape in South Africa. Winters in Angola, Zambia and southern Zaire. This is a bird of open country and grassland, with a preference for highlands and nearby water. It is often found around man-made structures.
It builds a bowl-shaped mud nest with a soft lining of grass or hair. Usually near or over water. The nest is often reused for next years brood.
The three eggs of a clutch are white with brown and blue blotches, and are hatched by the female alone for 15–16 days. Both parents then feed the chicks. Fledging takes another 20–21 days
The young can swim a short distance to safety if they fall from the nest into water, now that could be a photo op.
It feeds mainly on flying insects, which it pursues with a fast twisting flight
My favorite is the fourth one with his little mouth open. The Swallow also has stunning colors. The blue is beautiful.
I like that one too… not sure what it was on about, but gave a different photo…
Fantastic pictures. I love Swallows. Such agility to catch insects on the move.
Thanks Mate.. they are very special to watch..
Love to watch swallows building their nests.
I have a few sets of them building and feeding their young… it fascinates me…
This little guy is a beautiful color! I love the photo of him squawking with his mouth so widely open!
I think he’d had enough and just wanted me to go…
Lovely series of captures, Rob! Love the one that looks like it’s screaming for food.
It was actually telling me to take a hike… to get outa there
lol! I can hear it now 🙂
Gorgeous photos!
Thanks Louisa…
Elegant birds. An interesting survival strategy for young to be able to swim to safety if they fall out of nest.
Just shows how nature provides the skills to them, that we have to learn
They look so sweet, Bulldog. Beautiful shots!
Thank you Michalle…
Great shots. I love the one with the open mouth. They have such lovely markings.
Thanks TBM.. hope yesterdays shares helped with sales…
Beautiful colors. You know, since you had a bunch of bird shots, I have been noticing the differences in the birds in my neighborhood. I’ve always noticed certain varieties, but more recently, I’ve observed new ones I hadn’t seen earlier…you’re giving me a keener eye. 🙂
Thank you Mrs.P. will have you out there taking bird photos next…
Great shots but c’mon! That one with the mouth open is begging for a speech bubble!
I couldn’t add it was being rude to me…
More lovely birds added to your gallery, bulldog. I really enjoyed these. 🙂
Thanks AD
Really nice shots. I love the 3rd one and the 2nd is precious for the identical position of the two birds. They’re like a mirror image of each other. Lovely and sharp too. Super job.
Joey
Thanks you very much…
Gosh Rob what fantastic photos!
Thank you…
Look like that red position on the head is an identity giveaway.
It is a bit of an aid …
Beautiful.
Thanks Spook
The first one’s swooping lines and texture of the bird’s mimics the bark. How did you get the bird(s) to cooperate? nicely captured
You have to sweet talk them.. It was a lucky capture they came and sat right at the bird hide.. I hung out and they let me do my thing…
Sono scatti stupendi, sembra che la rondine ti stia guardando per capire cosa stai facendo 🙂
Complimenti, bellissimeeeeee
Thanks Patrizia… they were quite concerned on why I was half hanging out of the bird hide…
They sure are pretty! I love swallows.
They are pretty little guys…
I love how close you managed to get and still have a sharp photo. Very nice!
Thanks Ingrid,, had to hang out of the hide to capture these…
Great captures as ever – so good to see.
Thanks Brian
Incredible shots!!!! Love the one with its mouth open! Thank you, Bulldog.
Thanks Skye… I think he was talking to me…
They are so cute! I love the one where they’re cuddled together and the one has its mouth wide open! It’s like he’s saying, ‘enough pictures already!’ 😉
I have the same idea… “get out of here” I think is what he said…
oh so they don’t cuss like they do here then…
No I was being polite… it said F.. Off…
hahaha I knew it!
How close were you ??? – it’s like they were right beside you – magical photos … that last photo of the two hungry “small” with the open beak – priceless, Rob .. stunning colors, I have always liked brown in combination with blue .. and this shows I have been right all the time.
They weren’t more than 3 metres away.. hung out of the bird hide and they seemed quite happy to let me do my thing… thanks Viveka.. I like that colour combo as well, it doesn’t stand out so much in life as it does on the photos…
You done a fantastic job .. here .. and I suppose they felt comfortable with having you close by – fantastic beautiful bird and bigger than our swallows.
Those are the swallows I’m more familiar with. Vivid shots.
I thought they would be Col… pretty well every where one looks…
WOW! I was going down slowly on the page and there was one bird then two bird and in the same composition so I expected to find three and four too 🙂 They are amazing birds and you captured them so beautifully. Fascinated me. Thank you dear Rob, love, nia
Thank you Nia… the others would not come and sit at the same time… when one came in to land the other took off…
I LOVE the photo with the birds mouth open. What a great shot . . . but they’re all great.
Thanks Maralee…
