Knob-billed Duck (Sarkidiornis melanotos).
Found in tropical wetlands in sub-Saharan Africa,Madagascar and south Asia from Pakistan to Laos and extreme southern China. It also occurs in continental South America south to the Paraguay River region in eastern Paraguay, south-eastern Brazil and the extreme northeast of Argentina, and as a vagrant on Trinidad.
Now you know where to find it, how would you like a knob like that on top of you lip?

Must be bloody awkward having that get in the way….
Now for a little humour… an email I received titled “1960 hits renamed for present day US” not sure if I should laugh or cry….
Some of the artists from the 60’s are revising their hits, with new lyrics to accommodate aging baby boomers. Who can remember doing the "Limbo" as if it were yesterday!
Here they are; –
Bobby Darin’s — “Splish, Splash, I was having a Flash!” (Hot flush)
Herman’s Hermits — “Mrs Brown you’ve got a lovely walker”
The Bee Gees — “How can you mend a broken hip”
Roberta Flack — “The first time ever I forgot your face”
Johnny Nash — “I can’t see clearly now”
Paul Simon — “50 ways to lose your liver”
The Commodores — “Once twice three times to the bathroom”
Procal Harem — “A whiter shade of white”
Leo Sayer — “You make me feel like napping”
The Temptations — “Papa’s got a kidney stone”
Abba — “Denture Queen”
Tony Orlando — “Knock three times on the ceiling if you hear me fall”
Helen Reddy — “I’m a woman; hear me snore”
Leslie Gore — “It’s my procedure and I’ll cry if I want to”
Willy Nelson — “On the commode again”
Now I don’t expect all of you to recognise these songs, you all being so young, but there might just be one or two of you out there that will. Those who don’t know the original names can ask and I will tell you…. but come on don’t be pretending….
A fascinating duck 🙂 (terrific takes, Rob). I have recognised Paul Simon’s song 😀
Thanks Paula…
never see one like that!
Actually quite a common fellow here…
I know them all. Yikes! What’s worse is that I relate to all the new titles.
Now I can officially say …. welcome to the club…
I love the bulbous knob on the nose – it makes this fella unique! 😀 I also noticed the beautiful colours on it’s back. Wow!
I know all those songs (now I’m showing my age) and they gave me a big giggle this morning! Very clever indeed 😉
Thanks Dianne…. the duck has a great colour not that many notice it when it has a snoz like that… like looking at a big breasted female, one remembers the boobs but can’t remember the face…
I don’t know if the duck is ugly or beautiful … but he raises a eyebrow. I feel a bit sorry for him .. for his look, but he look proud enough. *smile – great gallery. And I recognized quite a few songs.
I am woman, hear me roar – dancing queen – 50 ways to lose your lover – the first time ever I saw your face -you make me heel like dancing
I thought you would know the songs being so good with posting music every day… thanks Viveka,,, I think this is the proverbial “Ugly Duckling”,,,
“It’s my procedure and I’ll cry if I want to”–this makes much more sense than the original title. Why would you cry at your party? I actually know all the songs. Listened to them growing up. I think I was born in the wrong decade.
And that’s a nose!
I didn’t think you that old… in fact I though you still to be young… but glad you listened to them growing up… it was good music…
What a schnoz!! 🙂 It would make kissing rather difficult. 🙂 Thanks for the e-mail smiles, bulldog. Made my day complete.
Thanks AD… yep that is a difficult duck to kiss, not that I would know, but just glad I’m not so built… how the hell do you see past that thing… maybe it works like a rudder when in flight, looks where it wants to go and turns automatically…
Cute even with the bobby nose, stunning shots. But it is your sense of humor that makes me laugh out loud! Excellent Blog : )
Thank you… glad it makes you laugh… I never know how it will be taken…
Very interesting bird. Does the knob serve a purpose? I notice a little hole on the side.
I cannot find on any search why this duck has a knob… it apparently is bigger when in breeding, but apart from that … one of those anomalies of nature…
Now that’s quite a knob! Reminds me of the time I had chronic urticaria (hives). You just never knew where the next bump was going to appear. Loved the spin on the ’60s hits but we all know Bulldog that women do not snore! 😉
The only reason women don’t snore ’cause they don’t hear themselves.. lol ..
Meaning we don’t snore loud enough to wake ourselves up…lol? 😉
Yipes! That’s some knob!
You can say that again…
lol 😛
Odd looking bills but great photos! Love the song titles too. 😉
Thanks Diana… your too young to remember the songs I’m sure…
Are you kidding me? My Dad listened to them all. Remember those Ktell albums – 50 greatest hits by 50 artists? Good music never gets old!
I knew you were too young, but your Dad exposed you to good music…
First, thanks for a great laugh my friend. Those revised lyrics are top humor hits! We need to have more music like that! As for the knob on the nose, it made our duck fella uniquely beautiful. I guess, even in real life, it’s our imperfections that make us stand out in a fascinating way. Something most if us relate to. Best wishes to your family.
Thank you my friend… yes he is a touch ugly yet at the same time beautiful…
A not so pretty bird in a good photograph.
I might as well admit that I know most of those songs and only three of them apply to me 😉
Yep it is a real ugly lump…. I thought you might know the songs… the problem is I know them so well I can sing them and remember the words,,, lol
Yup, I know them all and they gave me my morning laugh. Thanks Bulldog :). By the way, I think that knob would be really annoying. It would always be in your line of sight!
It is only on the male and more prominent when mating… maybe he needs sights to find his way…
Oh dear you knew them all… welcome to the club of the baby boomers…
LOL! Love the revised hits Rob. Thanks for the laugh.
Great shots as usual. Such a beautiful duck. Knob and all. 😀
Thanks Sonel… showing our age unfortunately… lol
Never seen this duck before or its knob, and I can’t work out what purpose it serves. As for the songs, unfortunately, I recognise all but two.
The knob I believe has something to do with breeding and is only found on the male…
I have never seen a duck like this one before 🙂
Thanks Michelle… now you’ve seen a photo of one… lol
🙂
It might be very sexy in the duck world to have a knobby nose…..
I am part of the oldies, I know all the songs…. well with the right words…. and I am proud of it! 🙂
There you go Ute… one of us…
holey jamolely – good word eh! What an amazing bird – not sure if ugly or not….. fantastic photos though – always one thing to be guaranteed of – fantastic photos!
Thank you … you’re too kind…
Cute. Not the knobby nose – the quotes.
Thanks Anneli…
Oh my word, you are on a roll lately!! I recognized all of them….it’s true….I am officially old. 🙂
You have probably said this before, Bulldog, but what kind of camera do you use? Thanks! These shots are wonderful!!
Thanks Skye… kind of you to pretend that you are old like some of us… lol…
My camera is a Fujifilm HS 10, nothing fancy a mid range camera that works for me… I intend buying the upgrade the HS 50 as soon as Linda lets up on the funds… she is the financial controller… the HS 50 gives me the equivalent lens variation of 28 to 1000 mm, so I can zoom just that little bit more….
You are just as funny as the duck!
Thanks Julie, what a nice complement… just glad I don’t have the knob on the nose… lol
What an interesting looking duck.
(by the way the focus on your images is very, very sharp. Are they taken from a tripod or hand-held?).
Thanks for the laughs too.
I take probably 99% of my photos hand held… very seldom a tripod, most of the places I go to it is unpractical to have a tripod… but there is always a tree or pole to lean against to aid with the shakes…but thanks for the complement…
