The black-shouldered kite (Elanus axillaris)
A similar species found throughout Australia, Eurasia and North America. The adult black-shouldered kite is a small and graceful, predominantly pale grey and white, raptor with black shoulders and red eyes.
Like all the kites, it is a specialist predator of rodents, which it hunts singly or in pairs by hovering in mid-air above open land.
This little guy was sitting in a tree that had fallen down and finally got tired of me taking his photo and flew off…
The kite is an impressive bird. I like your second photo especially. In the UK we have the red kite which ten years ago was facing extinction. It was re-introduced as part of a long term protection programme, proving that well managed conservation can work.
I was watching these flying over the sugar cane this morning. Amazing! 😀
What a beaut!
Thanks … I agree
That first photo has such an impressive perspective/composition! Fantastic!
Thank you Angeline….
something so graceful about birds – especially when they are flying and as usual you’ve captured this guy beautifully.
Thanks Jan… wait for the new camera….
I love your photos. Always something nice to see.
Thanks Anneli
I loved seeing this! It’s interesting to compare it to the one we have here which is a White Tailed Kite!
Interesting I must look that one up

Thanks
You’re welcome
Gorgeous photos, bulldog. Birds look much bigger in the air, than on a branch. 🙂
You are so right… Thanks Sylvia
I just love when you catch birds in flight bulldog. Beautiful photos. ❤

Sjoe, baie mooi. Kiek jy al met die nuwe kamara?
Nog nie… by Customs…. moet ek meer se
Interesting … I’ve never thought of small birds as predators of rodents. I would have just assumed he was a big boy.
They are very proficient hunters… great little guys to capture in flight….
Bellissimi scatti come sempre. Complimenti.
Un caro saluto. Ciao, Patrizia
Thanks Pat…
